today’s shark is pretty much a no-brainer, because the week is running out. today’s shark is the great hammerhead shark!!! how can you not love these sharks? they’re so damn odd looking, and they’re really the stand out of the species, you know? the bonehead and scalloped versions are cool, too, but the great hammerhead really is the best. at least, i’m most interested in them. in some places you can see whole schools of other hammerhead sharks swimming around together, but the great hammerhead sharks are the only ones known to go off on a solitary lifestyle.
also known as, sphyrna mokarran, vital stats are:
- the great hammerhead is the largest of all hammerhead sharks
- up to 11.5′ long, but there have been 20′ sharks recorded
- great hammerheads will kill stingrays by using their hammer-shaped head to pin them down while they bite the wings off the ray
- they are known to be cannibalistic but the reasons remain unclear.
- great hammerhead meat is sold for human consumption (fresh, fresh-frozen, dried-salted, and smoked), its liver oil for vitamins, fins for soup, hides for leather, and carcasses for fishmeal. (EW!)

the shark of the day today is the GREAT WHITE SHARK! RAWR! seriously, you know everything until now was just putting off to see how long i could stand it before going off about great whites. honestly, they’re so fucking awesome they could be shark of the day every damn day for weeks on end. and while they’re not my 100% absolute total and complete favorite shark, they are totally up in the top 5 (which i’m posting this week, natch).
jaws really didn’t do this shark justice, and it sure as hell didn’t do it any favors. but just look at the size, the splendor, those fabulous teeth…it’s a shark to be reckoned with, man.
the great white, also known as carcharodon carcharias, vital stats are:
- the great white’s latin name means: ‘ragged tooth’
- they are the largest known predatory fish, an apex predator at the top of the food chain (discounting humans, of course)
- generally 10′-15′ but reported sightings of up to 21′!
- uniquely, great white sharks are warm-blooded (in the sense that they can regulate their body temperatures to higher than the surrounding water), this allows them to withstand extremely cold water temperatures.
- female great whites are the dominant sex of the species
- great whites have an 11-month gestation period where intrauterine-cannibalism takes place, usually only 1 pup out of up to 40 survives gestation.
- great whites DO NOT eat people, they are NOT maneaters. in fact, in most cases humans are a bad idea for great whites to eat because the sharks’ digestion is too slow to cope with the human body’s high ratio of bone to muscle and fat. when a human is attacked by a great white, it’s usually their own damn fault.

today’s shark is the cookie cutter shark. not really a fearsome shark by many standards, but still they have a pretty unique and deep bite so they’re nothing to scoff at. nobody would fancy having a uniform hunk of flesh gouged out by one of these bad boys. i remember being pretty amused by these tiny little sharks during last year’s sharkweek. they’re a bit strange, and incidentally, sometimes even gouge at whale and basking sharks!
known as Isistius brasiliensis, cigar shark, or luminous shark, vital statistics are:
- only about 20″ long fully grown!
- the underside of the shark is bioluminescent, glow shark!
- the cookie cutter is a type of dogfish shark
- cookie cutters are considered parasites
- another reason not to eat fish? sometimes cookie cutters have already taken a bite of the fish you see in markets. ew.
- it has an elongated body cavity filled with an enormous liver comprising as much as 35% of its total weight
so now we’ve gone from VERY LARGE shark to VERY TINY shark. honestly, i have far too many favorites to confine to just a week though…so…

i am literally counting down the days until pineapple express opens. seriously, COUNTING THEM DOWN. and it think it’s fortuitous that it is opening on august 6th. plus, i need a strong dose of seth rogen in my life.
but honestly, how jealous am i of motherfuckin’ james franco right now?
he is one lucky bitch! i would give anything to cuddle up with mr. rogen right now. he looks so comfy, and i loves me some comfy boys. plus have you ever looked into seth rogen’s eyes? it’s like the first time i ever heard the beatles… heh.
ok, so he’s not conventional crush material, but i’m not a conventional girl. and while people could be like ‘oh he’s dumpy,’ or ‘oh he’s so immature’ (um, hello, it’s called ACTING), or ‘oh there’s no way he’d land a babe like katherine heigl’…i’d like to say what-EVER! one: actors != as seen on tv. two: a sense of humor is the sexiest thing about a man. three: he looks cuddly and comfy, not chiseled and hard, not emaciated and flimsy.
also: my undying love is cemented by freaks ‘n geeks. so.much.love.

today marks the start of the most fabulous week know to man. you know what i’m talkin’ about…SHARK WEEK!
oh, does it get better than this? great whites and tigers and bulls and whales and hammer heads all in the mix. plus, extra special myth busters editions just for this week! how fuckin’ rad is that? officially, it starts at 9 pm tonight, but there’s plenty of shark action on tv right now. some of it is stuff from previous years that we’ve already seen, but some of it is new. or at least, new to me. and either way, it’s full of kick ass sharks so i don’t care.
i love shark week so. i’ve literally be counting.down.the.days. until shark week started this year. it’s like, high point of the fucking month. and of course, having a real great white wash up on the coast recently only served to fuel the fire. i’ve already started up my sharkrunners team, and despite having a rocky start it’s already loads of fun! seriously, sharkrunners keeps me entertained for weeks on end. yeah, the waiting game aspect of it is a bit tedious at time, but: SHARKS! plus, the boy plays too, and it’s always fun to have a lil friendly competition. also, the buttnugget plays at home. seriously, everyone who is awesome fuckin’ loves shark week. plus, it’s real time info on real time sharks in the australian reefs!
what more can you ask for, right?

when i was a little girl i wasn’t necessarily interested in all the things that fall into the “little girl” category. my favorite place to be was the sandbox in our shared back yard, or climbing trees and fences. my favorite outfit was a baseball cap, my old worn overalls (with tons of pockets for all sorts of things i’d squirrel away), and comfy sneakers. my favorite toys were dinosaurs (still are), legos, lincoln logs and gi joes. i loved matchbox cars and remote control racers. oh, i had quite a few squashy stuffed animals (some of them still kept today) that were cherished and loved. and the requisite my little pony treasure trove…but those were for my toy soldiers to ride on, of course. or to stage battles in the sandbox.
i had barbie dolls, of course, but was always pretty much ambivalent towards them. the ken dolls were disturbing to look at or play with and usually ended up decapitated or torn to pieces for realistic ‘casualties of war’ or so my dinosaurs had something to nom nom nom on (jurassic park toys were the best, and my dream come true at age 12). the barbies got painted or drowned or at the very least an interesting haircut. the clothes and fashions didn’t interest me. what did, were the tiny little accessories. barbie-doll-sized phones and furniture and foods. i loved dollhouses because everything miniature and exquisitely detailed fascinated me. barbies were cast aside routinely over organizing mini-closets and decorating faux-apartments (side note: i converted my daddy’s old liquor cabinet to a deluxe barbie house when i was 10, mainly to showcase all the tiny appliances and furniture).
